Ok so I recently (like tonight when i heard it on the radio driving home) decided this song is one of my top ten all time faves. maybe if youre lucky ill do installments of the other nine when i decide what they are.

Anyways, heres Frankie Valli performing it last year in New York, and he still sounds seriously fantastic. (for some reason i thought he was dead... oops.) So apparently the Pentagon has footage of US military killing journalists. While I know (and hope) that this is probably an isolated incident, the fact that the Pentagon attempted to hide this makes me wonder what other information like this they are keeping quiet.

I also have always been someone who tries to be supportive of our troops regardless of how I feel about the war they are fighting, but things like this make it harder for me to do that.

UCSD and the Compton Cookout

Well guys, here's my take on things.
(for readers who arent UCSD students, click here for more info.)

Last weekend an event took place called the Compton Cookout, which I'm sure by now all of you are aware of.

The issue at the center of this controversy is the racist nature of the party. Attendees were encouraged to dress and act in a stereotypical manner associated with African-Americans.

Somehow, the party and event thats followed were transformed into a free speech issue. People are asking, why was this allowed to happen? Why was the Koala able to broadcast racial slurs on SRTV? Why am I not protected from this threatening speech? In response, AS immediately froze all funding for student media organizations. This has led to a debate about how AS should fund student media going forward. As far as I can tell, this debate is what has been pushed the to the forefront due to these events.

However, THIS SHOULD NOT EVEN BE A DEBATE! AS either needs to provide funds for all student media organizations, or none of them. The second they create a protocol for which orgs get funded and which don't they are effectively censoring the ones that do not receive funding as well as endorsing the ones that do. Free speech means whether you agree with the ideas or not, they deserve to have a voice. Do i agree with the conservative politics of the California Review? Hell no. However, that does not mean I do not think they have just as much of a right to be funded by AS as any other organization. As for the Koala, while I may not agree with their methods, I honestly believe that as Kris Gregorian stated in the Guardian they were "trying to raise the debate, trying to raise awareness." They were trying to force people, particularly those whose race was not directly targeted by the party, to think about why they were so offended by this event. Were they afraid that people would think they shared this racist attitude if they did not react to it in a certain way? If a person knows that they are not racist, why would they be so terrified that others would think that they are? What is this saying about racism at our university and in our country? Is racism something that people fight against because they truly believe all people all equal or because they don't want to be viewed as uneducated?

Some students are declaring that they have a right to be protected from this hateful speech. While it is unfortunate that members of our community were subjected to things that made them feel threatened and uncomfortable, how is the university supposed to protect them from this? That is not their job. The only feasible way to protect everyone on our campus from hearing or seeing things that make them feel unsafe would be to eradicate free speech entirely. I personally feel threatened by the anti-choice protesters on campus and I REALLY wish they would fuck off and realize that our countries laws do not need to reflect their religion, but I would never deny them their right to express their views. (That sentence pained me to write.)

A student from BSU was quoted who was quoted in the Guardian said, "I'm not saying they don't have the right to freedom of speech, but where's my right to be protected from that? I am a student in your class, and I have to sit next to these racist kids. What kind of college is this?" Now I cannot be entirely sure because I do not have the full context of his statement, but to me it seems he is implying that these racist kids should not even be students here. But how else are these kids going to learn that racism is wrong except through education and the exposure to a diverse group of people that comes with it?

What the university needs to do in response to this event is not shut down orgs or expel students. This is an opportunity for EDUCATION in the truest sense of the word. People need to be educated about stereotypes, race, how these ideas develop, and how they should be dealt with in today's world. This is a chance for us to learn about real world issues outside of physics classes or the chem labs that so many of our students are entombed in. The university does not need to focus on investigating the party planners or the Koala. They need to investigate the "campus climate" and what about it enabled these students to be ok with throwing a party like this.

leggings, tights and pants: the distinctions.

pants: i think we all know what pants are.
leggings: stretchy material in a pants-esque shape. may be cotton, shiny, lame, black, pink, etc. NOT sheer. generally do not have pockets or a zippy crotch plus button. except for the sometimes questionable jean leggings.
tights: sheer. can sometimes be of a thicker sweatery material, but still less substantial than leggings.

i am of the thinking that leggings can be worn sans pants, shorts or skirt on top, as long as the shirt worn mostly covers the crotchular region. while leggings will not expose said region, there is always the danger of camel toe. CONSTANT VIGILANCE IS REQUIRED.

tights, on the other hand, SHOULD NEVER BE WORN SANS PANTS, SHORTS OR SKIRT. seriously. they are not designed to cover your lady bits, even if they are of a less sheer knit.

i honestly cant believe that some people need to be told this, but i swear during the first week of school this year i saw a girl walking around wearing ONLY BLACK TIGHTS with a shirt that did not come close to covering her crotchular region. now i know youre probably thinking, come on blair, they were probably just questionable leggings. no. they were not. they were most definitely tights and i know because i stared at this girl for a full five minutes. i could not look away i was so fascinated/horrified.

anyways, apparently the Apparel does not agree with me that leggings can stand on their own. oh well. theyve started including warning labels in their leggings.

on a semi related note: went out downtown for a friend's birthday last night, and did not realized until this morning that my outfit was entirely american apparel aside from my shoes. im sort of proud and sort of disgusted with myself.
